Ocean Life Education: Ocean literacy is an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you – and the influence that you have on the ocean. The basic principles of ocean literacy do not fall within traditional science disciplines, they instead focus on integrated science.

This resource uses engaging videos to explore marine conservation, animal classification and sustainable consumer choices, helping students connect real-world conservation with science concepts. It includes inquiry-based classroom activities that support critical thinking and align with Australian Curriculum outcomes in Science and Sustainability.

A 10-week unit plan containing lessons and activities that allow students to explore the definitions and determinants of reef health from how the biology of corals is influenced by the environment, through to local and regional approaches to management of reef threats.  The unit plan can be used as a full block, or flexible, to suit your needs.  Topics covered include coral biology, marine biodiversity, reef habitats, health of reefs, local and global threats, marine management, sustainability, citizen science, marine research, Coralwatch and risk assessments.

Get Hooked… Fish for Life, a versatile teaching resource designed for high schools across New South Wales. This program supports interdisciplinary learning in Geography, Science, and Marine and Aquaculture Technology. Teachers can choose from a range of topics across four dedicated units, allowing for tailored lessons that cater to diverse classroom needs and interests.

This lesson plan teaches students about the journey of water, exploring how it moves through the landscape as groundwater and surface water, and follows its path from catchment areas to the tap, using hands-on models and activities to understand these processes.

Investigate ocean threats (e.g. pollution, overfishing), discussing human impacts and causes, and recording ideas to build environmental awareness.

Students investigate the impacts of climate change on coral reef ecosystems, including coral bleaching, reef biodiversity, and conservation strategies through curriculum-linked activities and case studies.

This resource explains how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples use Indigenous seasonal calendars and environmental knowledge based on long term observation of plants, animals, and weather patterns to understand and interpret Australia’s climate and seasonal change.
