Bush Nippers is a regional and rural inland adaptation to coastal nipper education programs and our successful lifesaving education program, which aims to build lifesaving and water safety knowledge and skills of children aged 5 to 14 years in open water environments.

Life Saving Victoria’s Lifesaving Education Programs create ‘Everyday Lifesavers’ out of Victorian students, by teaching them practical and engaging water safety, lifesaving and emergency response skills. These skills empower students to make safe aquatic related decisions while enjoying their local waterways.

Join science presenter Laura Wells and Ray Ingrey from the Gujaga Foundation in a special lesson held on the Dharawal lands of La Perouse, Sydney.  Students will learn about what sea country and sustainable seafood mean, and then follow Laura and Ray on a walk to learn the words for different seafood species in the Dharawal language and hear how those species have been traditionally harvested and cared for by Indigenous peoples at La Perouse.

Identify fish body, eye, mouth, tail fin, pectoral and dorsal fin shapes.

This 40-60 minute lesson for ages 12+ will introduce learners to some of the ways that seafood production can be designed for a more sustainable future. Learners will discover some of the innovations being made in aquaculture and wild fishing to help reduce pollution and entanglements with marine wildlife.

The Beach Safety Hub “Rock Fishing Safety” page explains that while rock fishing is a popular pastime, it carries significant risks and it offers guidance on keeping yourself, family and friends safe. It includes safety tips, fact sheets developed for multilingual communities, subtitled safety videos, and personal stories from people who have experienced dangers firsthand.

The Beach Safety Hub offers essential tips to help you and your family enjoy a safe day at the beach. It provides guidance on preparing for a beach visit, including checking beach conditions with the Beachsafe app, understanding hazards like rip currents and marine creatures, and packing appropriate items such as sunscreen, hats, and swimwear. The page also emphasizes the importance of swimming between the red and yellow flags, staying hydrated, and knowing how to seek help in emergencies.

These resources are designed to raise awareness of common hazards and help reduce the risk of accidents or drowning. They are also available in a wide range of languages, ensuring accessibility for diverse communities.
